Executives for New Line Cinema had wanted a more "epic" finale for the series after 2001's "The Fellowship Of The Ring", with a bigger story arc and an expanded vision based on Tolkien's original trilogy. The result is Jackson's desire to expand the scope of the story while still telling a complete narrative, with nearly 3 hours of unbroken action. ""I had always felt that the last film should be more than just a conclusion,"" Jackson says. "It should be an fulfilment. I wanted to know what happened next. When I realised that it had taken me 28 years to write this book, I realised that if I didn't get on with doing something about it then I might never get the opportunity again." Jackson was also concerned about popularizing his Middle-earth stories in new generations, driven partly by his own children's questioning of what they had seen in the films compared with their father's earlier drawings and books. Jackson had wanted to end the films increasingly focusing on Gollum and his quest for "precious" and he wrote the film without knowing the fate of Arwen and Éowyn, who were introduced in "The Return of the King".
